2011
Θα πάψει να μένει κόσμος σε σεισμογενείς περιοχές;
Θα πάψει να μένει κόσμος σε παραθαλάσσιες περιοχές;
Θα πάψει να μένει κόσμος κοντά σε ποτάμια;
Θα πάψει ο κόσμος να μένει σε τροπικές περιοχές;

Το BBC είχε αναφέρει νωρίτερα ότι είχαν φέρει γραμμή ηλεκτρικού (αν λειτουργούν ακόμα τα ηλεκτρικά Tepco warned the process of reconnecting power could take up to 15 hours )

Radiation Slightly Down Around ReactorTOKYO (Kyodo)--Radiation readings around the troubled reactor of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant fell slightly after the Self-Defense Forces discharged water in an attempt to cool an apparently overheating spent fuel pool, the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency said Friday.
The radiation reading came to 279.4 microsievert per hour at the point roughly 1 kilometer west of the No. 2 reactor at 5 a.m. Friday, compared with 292.2 microsievert per hour at 8:40 p.m. Thursday, shortly after the SDF discharged water from fire trucks, according to the agency

Japan's nuclear safety agency says smoke is rising from a building housing a damaged nuclear reactor at a power plant crippled by last week's tsunami.
A spokesman for Japan's nuclear safety agency said the smoke was seen rising from Unit 2 at the Fukushima plant.
The spokesman says the agency does not know the cause, but an explosion occurred in Unit 2 earlier in the week, possibly damaging a chamber next to the reactor core

The unprecedented cooling mission, which was launched Thursday by the Self-Defense Forces by spraying tons of water over the plant's No. 3 reactor building, was bolstered on the second day with more pumps, after efforts were focused in the morning to restore power to some of the reactors' cooling systems, the government said
considering dousing a spent nuclear fuel pool at the No. 1 reactor, although it does not pose as imminent a threat as the No. 3 and No. 4 reactors of releasing radioactive materials into the air, to extend all possible means.
The radiation level at 11 a.m. dropped to 265.0 microsievert per hour from 351.4 microsievert per hour at 12:30 a.m. Thursday. It measured 292.2 microsievert per hour at 8:40 p.m. Thursday, shortly after SDF trucks sprayed water at the No. 3 reactor pool as part of efforts to avert any massive emission of radioactive materials into the air from the facility.

March 18, 2011, 5:00 pm Japanese engineers have conceded that burying a crippled nuclear plant in sand and concrete – the method used to seal huge leakages from Chernobyl in 1986 – may be a last resort to prevent a catastrophic radiation release.
But they still hoped to solve the crisis by fixing a power cable to at least two reactors to restart water pumps needed to cool overheating nuclear fuel rods. Workers also sprayed water on the No.3 reactor, the most critical of the plant’s six.
It was the first time the facility operator had acknowledged burying the sprawling complex was possible, a sign that piecemeal actions such as dumping water from military helicopters or scrambling to restart cooling pumps may not work.
"It is not impossible to encase the reactors in concrete. But our priority right now is to try and cool them down first," an official from the plant operator, Tokyo Electric Power Co, told a news conference
As engineers work to restore power to the stricken plant, the toll of dead and missing from the quake and tsunami reached 16,900.

Fukushima Hiked To Same Accident Level As Three Mile IslandTOKYO (Dow Jones)--The Japan Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency said Friday it raised the accident scale level of the quake-damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear-power complex to 5, similar to the level of the accident at Three Mile Island in 1979.
The agency attributed the decision to raise the level from 4 to "serious damage" to fuel at the plant's reactors

News Brief, 3/18/11, 10 AM EDT
Spraying of spent fuel pools at Units 3 and 4 is still underway. Visual inspection of Unit 4’s pool showed water in the pool, and so efforts have been temporarily focused upon Unit 3. While efforts at using helicopters to dump water onto the pools had been largely unsuccessful , army firetrucks used in putting out aircraft fires have been employed with some success. The elite Tokyo Hyper Rescue component of the Tokyo fire department has arrived on scene and is conducting missions of roughly two hours in length, during which they spray the pools for 7-8 minutes, wait for steam to dissipate, and spray again.
A cable has been laid from a TEPCO power line 1.5 km from the facility, which will be used to supply power to emergency cooling systems of the reactors at Units 1 and 2.
Backup diesel generators have been connected to cool the spent fuel pools at Units 5 and 6. As of 4 PM JST, temperatures in those pools have reached 65.5 and and 62 degrees Celsius.

Φαίνεται ότι "κάπως" το νερό μειώθηκε και τώρα ειπώθηκε το "The possibility of re-criticality is not zero".

TOKYO (Nikkei)--Tokyo Electric Power will on Thursday start work to build makeshift electric power sources within the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, a move intended to inject water more efficiently into the plant's crippled reactors.
First, the utility will search for locations with relatively little radiation and install equipment for controlling power units and panels. The equipment will then be wired to water pumps on the outside of the reactors, the company said.
If the new power line is smoothly connected to the water pumps, workers will be able to cool fuel rods by sending seawater into reactor pressure vessels, containment vessels and storage pools of spent fuel.
Construction will start as soon as Thursday morning, an official said, but it will be unclear how long the work will take to complete until it begins. The work will be carried out at the same time as cooling efforts under way by police water cannon trucks

Λίγη ψυχραιμία;

http://blog.physics4u.gr/

Πόσοι έχουν πεθάνει από πυρηνικά ατυχήματα;

Αλλά πόσοι πέθαναν στο Τσερνόμπυλ και στο Three Mile Island;
Στο Three Mile Island του 1979, δεν πέθανε κανείς.
Κάποιος J.A.L.

Radiation Leak Feared At Spent Fuel Pool, Water Injection Ordered
TOKYO (Kyodo)--A nuclear crisis at the quake-hit Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant deepened Tuesday as fresh explosions occurred at the site and its operator said water in a pool storing spent nuclear fuel rods may be boiling, an ominous sign for the release of high-level radioactive materials from the fuel.
The government ordered the plant's operator, Tokyo Electric Power Co., on Tuesday night to inject water into the pool at the No. 4 reactor to cool it down "as soon as possible to avert a major nuclear disaster."
TEPCO said the water level in the pool storing the spent fuel rods at its Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant's No. 4 reactor may have dropped, exposing the rods. Unless the spent fuel rods are cooled down, they could be damaged and emit radioactive substances.
The firm said it has not yet confirmed the current water level or water temperature in the pool and will try to pour water into the facility from Wednesday through holes that were created following an explosion earlier Tuesday in the walls of the building that houses the reactor.
Due to high radiation levels at the No. 4 reactor, workers on Tuesday were unable to prepare for the pouring of water into the troubled pool. Difficult conditions have led the utility to evacuate around 730 of the 800 workers from the site, according to TEPCO.

TOKYO (Nikkei)--International crude oil prices are inching lower on concern that economic conditions in Japan may deteriorate following last Friday's earthquake and tsunami.
Prices briefly soared to a two-and-a-half year high when political unrest escalated in the Middle East and North Africa. But since the massive temblor, they have faced downward pressure on speculation about a worsening economic outlook for Japan.

Fukushima No.3 Reactor's Container Feared Damaged: EdanoTOKYO (Kyodo)--The container of the No.3 reactor of the quake-hit Fukushima No.1 nuclear power plant is feared to have been damaged and may have leaked radioactive steam Wednesday, emitting high-level radiation, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano said.
The radiation level briefly topped 2 milisievert at the plant, its operator Tokyo Electric Power Co. separately said.
The explanations were given after smoke was seen rising from the No.3 reactor since around 8:30 a.m., according to Edano.

UPDATE, 12.50pm: Japan has suspended operations to keep its stricken nuclear plant from melting down after surging radiation made it too dangerous for workers to stay.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano said the workers dousing the reactors in a frantic effort to cool them needed to withdraw.“The workers cannot carry out even minimal work at the plant now,” Mr Edano said. “Because of the radiation risk we are on standby,” he said.
As Japan struggles to avert a meltdown another earthquake has struck in the Pacific just off Japan’s Chiba prefecture. The Japan Meteorological Agency said the strong 6.0 magnitude quake was strong enough to sway buildings in Tokyo

TOKYO — A small crew of technicians, braving radiation and fire, became the only people remaining at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station on Tuesday — and perhaps Japan’s last chance of preventing a broader nuclear catastrophe
Japan’s nuclear crisis intensified again Wednesday, with Japanese authorities announcing that a containment vessel in a second reactor unit at the stricken Fukushima Daiichi plant in northeastern Japan may have ruptured and appeared to be releasing radioactive steam. That would be the second vessel to be compromised in two days
The vessel had appeared to be the last fully intact line of defense against large-scale releases of radioactive materials, but it was not clear how serious the possible breach might be.
... unclear if the fire, at the Reactor No. 4 building, had died out. He also was not clear if it was a new fire or if the fire Tuesday had never gone out.

SDF Choppers Unable To Drop Water On Nuke Reactor Due To RadiationTOKYO (Kyodo)--The Self-Defense Forces will not conduct a planned operation Wednesday to drop water from helicopters on the troubled No. 3 reactor of the Fukushima nuclear power plant because of the high radiation level around the plant, Defense Ministry officials said.
The Ground Self-Defense Force helicopters were on standby to drop water on the reactor as it is feared the reactor may have released radioactive steam due to damage to its containment vessel
TOKYO (Dow Jones)--Preparations are underway for a new attempt to cool reactors at a stricken nuclear power station, Japan's top government spokesman said Wednesday, as media reports indicated a plan to drop water on the plant from helicopters had been abandoned for the day.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano said the new cooling operations at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Plant would begin in the evening, although he didn't specify what the operations would involve.
Local media reported that an earlier plan to drop water on reactor at the site No. 3 using Self Defense Force helicopters had been abandoned due to excessive radiation levels at the site.
Edano said radiation at the plant was about 1,500 microsieverts as of 0700 GMT. He said that the latest readings posed no immediate danger to the health of people remaining in the evacuation area around the plant.
Earlier in the day Japan's Nuclear & Industrial Safety Agency said the radiation level around the plant peaked at 6,400 microsieverts at 0145 GMT after smoke was seen coming from one of the reactors. Edano said at an earlier briefing that the most likely explanation for the sudden rise in radiation levels was an emission of radioactive steam from the containment vessel.
A chest x-ray typically exposes the patient to a radiation dose of around 100 microseverts, according to the Radiological Society of North America. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission has a dose limits of 10,000 microsieverts per nuclear event and an annual occupational limit for workers who deal with radiation on the job of 50,000 microsieverts. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency advises that a dose of 500,000 microseiverts can cause nausea, while 4 million microseiverts can be fatal if not treated.

Japanese authorities have also informed the IAEA that at 12:00 UTC of 15 March the water level in Unit 5 had decreased to 201 cm above the top of the fuel. This was a 40 cm decrease since 07:00 UTC of 15 March. Officials at the plant were planning to use an operational diesel generator in Unit 6 to supply water to Unit 5

(χθεσινό συμβάν) It appears that for the first time, the containment system around one of the Fukushima Daiichi reactors has been breached.
Officials have referred to a possible crack in the suppression chamber of reactor 2 - a large doughnut-shaped structure, also known as the torus, below the reactor housing.
That would allow steam, containing radioactive substances, to escape continuously.
This is the most likely source of the high radioactivity readings seen near the site in the middle of Tuesday

Fukushima No. 3 Reactor Vents Smoke, But Container Damage Unlikely
TOKYO (Kyodo)--Japan's nuclear crisis at the Fukushima No. 1 power station showed no signs of abating Wednesday, five days after a mega earthquake crippled it, with the focus shifting to how to address the possible overheating of pools that store spent fuel rods at the already troubled No. 3 and No. 4 reactors.
What appeared to be smoke coming from the No. 3 reactor in the morning led the top government spokesman to point to the possibility of damage to the reactor's steel containment vessel, but it became more likely later in the day that the smoke was radioactive steam coming from the No. 3 reactor's spent fuel pool. Tuesday, March 15, 2011Water Level Remains Low At Fukushima No. 2 Reactor
TOKYO (Nikkei)--The fuel rods at the Fukushima nuclear power plant's No. 2 reactor were still fully exposed as of 3 a.m. Tuesday, with the water level remaining low, according to Tokyo Electric Power Co.
Tepco said earlier that it succeeded in opening the pressure-relieving valves, making it easier to pump seawater into the reactor as a coolant. But the water level has not recovered since.

Blast Heard At Fukushima's No.2 Reactor: GovtTOKYO (Kyodo)--An explosion was heard early Tuesday morning at the troubled No. 2 reactor of the quake-hit Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant, the government said, about five hours after work resumed to inject seawater into it to prevent overheating of exposed fuel rods.
Shortly after the 6:10 a.m. incident, the radiation level exceeded the legal limit to reach 965.5 micro sievert per hour, and it is feared that the reactor's pressure-suppression system was damaged, the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency.
Tokyo Electric Power Co., the plant's operator, said it is evacuating workers from the plant, except for those necessary for the work to cool the reactor.
http://e.nikkei.com/e/fr/tnks/Nni20110315D15JF810.htm

The nuclear reactor emergency in Japan has deteriorated significantly. Two more explosions occurred at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant on March 15. The first occurred at 6:10am local time at reactor No. 2, which had seen nuclear fuel rods exposed for several hours after dropping water levels due to mishaps in the emergency cooling efforts. Within three hours the amount of radiation at the plant rose to 163 times the previously recorded level, according to Japan’s Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency. Elsewhere radiation levels were said to have reached 400 times the “annual legal limit” at reactor No. 3. Authorities differed on whether the reactor pressure vessel at reactor No. 2 was damaged after the explosion, but said the reactor’s pressure-suppression system may have been damaged possibly allowing a radiation leak. Subsequently, a fire erupted at reactor No. 4 of the Fukushima Daini plant (where cooling systems had also failed) and was subsequently extinguished, but a hydrogen explosion occurred at No. 4 reactor as well, according to Kyodo. Kyodo also reported the government has ordered a no-fly zone 20 kilometers around the reactor, and Prime Minister Naoto Kan has expanded to 30 kilometers the range within which citizens should remain indoors and warned that further leaks are possible.
Reports from Japanese media currently tell of rising radiation levels in the areas south and southwest of the troubled plant due to a change in wind direction toward the southwest. Ibaraki prefecture, immediately south of Fukushima, was reported to have higher than normal levels. Chiba prefecture, to the east of Tokyo and connected to the metropolitan area, saw levels reportedly two to four times above the “normal” level. Utsunomiya, Tochigi prefecture, north of Tokyo, reported radiation at 33 times the normal level measured there. Kanagawa prefecture, south of Tokyo, reported radiation at up to 9 times the normal level. Finally, a higher than normal amount was reported in Tokyo. The government says radiation levels have reached levels hazardous to human health. Wind direction is not easily predictable, constantly shifting, and reports say it could shift west and then back eastward to sea within the next day. Wind direction, temperature, and topography all play a crucial factor in the spread of radioactive materials as well as their diffusion. It is impossible to know how reliable these preliminary readings are but they suggest a dramatic worsening as well as a wider spread than at any time since the emergency began.
The Japanese government has announced a 30 kilometer no-fly zone and is expanding evacuation zones and urging the public within a wider area to remain indoors. The situation at the nuclear facility is uncertain, but clearly deteriorating. Currently, the radiation levels do not appear immediately life-threatening outside the 20km evacuation zone. But if there is a steady northerly wind, the potential for larger-scale evacuations of more populated areas may become a reality. This would present major challenges to the Japanese government. Further, the potential for panic-induced individual evacuations could trigger even greater problems for the government to manage.

Harmful Radiation Level Detected At PlantTOKYO (Nikkei)--The radiation level at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant on Tuesday morning increased to a level considered potentially harmful to humans.
That reading, 400 millisieverts per hour, is 400 times the maximum amount of radiation deemed acceptable over one year.
The nuclear crisis triggered by Friday's earthquake may be of a severity equal to that of the Three Mile incident in the U.S., experts say.
On Tuesday morning, a hydrogen explosion occurred at a building that houses spent nuclear fuel at the plant's No. 4 reactor. The reactor had already been taken off-line for regular inspections when the temblor struck.
Also on Tuesday morning, the No. 2 reactor's suppression pool, located in the lower part of the containment vessel, was damaged by a blast.
Prime Minister Naoto Kan urged people within 30km of the plant to stay indoors. Those within 20km had already been told to evacuate.
At a press conference Tuesday morning, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano said radiation levels near the facility are far higher than those observed earlier, and have reached amounts that could pose possible health risks.
Higher-than-usual radiation levels have also been detected in the Kanto region, including in Ibaraki, Tokyo and Kanagawa prefectures, but not in amounts deemed harmful.

Tokyo (CNN) -- Spent fuel rods containing radioactive material may have burned in Tuesday's fire at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant -- causing a spike in radiation levels, the plant's owner said.
The blaze started Tuesday morning but was later extinguished, Tokyo Electric Power Company said. It was unclear how much radioactive material may have been emitted, or what kind of health threat that could pose
Officials: High temperatures may have caused used fuel rods to ignite or explode
Edano: Radiation levels at the plant gate "cause no harm to human health"
Walsh: A key question is whether the blast breached a containment vessel

IAEA Japan Earthquake Update (15 March 2011, 14:10 UTC)
http://www.iaea.org/newscenter/news/tsunamiupdate01.html
The IAEA Incident and Emergency Centre (IEC) continues to monitor the status of the nuclear power plants in Japan that were affected by the devastating earthquake and consequent tsunami.
All units at the Fukushima Daini, Onagawa, and Tokai nuclear power plants are in a safe and stable condition (i.e. cold shutdown).
The IAEA remains concerned over the status of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, where sea water injections to cool the reactors in Units 1, 2 and 3 are continuing. Attempts to return power to the entire Daiichi site are also continuing.
After explosions at both Units 1 and 3, the primary containment vessels of both Units are reported to be intact. However, the explosion that occurred at 04:25 UTC on 14 March at the Fukushima Daiichi Unit 2 may have affected the integrity of its primary containment vessel. All three explosions were due to an accumulation of hydrogen gas.
