Πόσο κάνουν οι χιλιάαααδες τόνοι CO2;

Barclays, Deutsche Bank lose top carbon analysts: sources
By Michael Szabo and Andrew Allan

LONDON, Feb 6 (Reuters Point Carbon) – Investment banks Barclays and Deutsche Bank have parted ways with their leading carbon analysts, sources at both firms told Reuters Point Carbon on Wednesday, as banks continue to pare back activity in the battered emissions trading market. Trevor Sikorski, Barclays’ London-based head of carbon research, and Isabelle Curien, lead carbon analyst at Deutsche Bank’s Paris office, have left their respective organisations, the two sources said. Curien was not immediately reachable while Sikorski would not comment on the claims. “Curien was made redundant as part of the bank’s exit from the carbon market,” a source at Deutsche Bank said, referring to an announcement last week that the bank had ceased all carbon trading operations. He could not confirm exactly when Curien had left the bank, saying only that it was in the past two months. When asked if Curien was let go or whether the bank had closed its emissions research division, a Deutsche Bank spokesman would not comment. A source at Barclays told Reuters Point Carbon that Sikorski was no longer working at the bank. Media reports in late January said at least 2,000 investment banking jobs could go at Barclays as it exits more risky operations as part of a restructuring to be unveiled on Feb. 12, when the bank publishes its 2012 results.
A Barclays spokeswoman would not comment on Sikorski’s departure, but a second source at the bank said “it’s business as usual” with regards to its emissions trading operations.
Stephan Leithner, a board member for compliance at Deutsche Bank, on Jan. 31 said the bank had shut its global carbon trading operations, without giving a date for the closure. The announcement came a month after German police raided a number of Deutsche Bank offices and arrested at least five employees as part of an investigation into suspected tax evasion and money laundering relating to the European carbon market. The bank’s Co-Chief Executive Juergen Fitschen and Chief Financial Officer Stefan Krause are also involved in the investigation, German prosecutors said.
Barclays and Deutsche Bank follow rivals including Morgan Stanley and Credit Agricole in cutting back carbon trading activity or staff in the past year or so.
The global economic slowdown, coupled with little progress by nations towards addressing rising greenhouse gas emissions, has forced many companies out of the global carbon markets, which the World Bank estimated were worth $176 billion in 2011.
